The Bake Off of Private Lives

conceived by Cristina Alicea
directed by Chris Caswell, Larry Connolly, and Abbie Tykocki

produced June 12-17, 2018

Tuesday-Saturday at 7:30pm
Sunday Matinee at 2pm
Take one play, break it in three parts, add three directors and three casts, and--voilà!—you've got the 7th annual directing "bake off," an engaging exploration of the “ingredients" different directors use to create the same play.

This year that play is:
Private Lives
by Noël Coward
In Private Lives, passion, laughter, romance, anger, and love set the stage for a battle of the sexes as divorced couple, Amanda and Elyot, find themselves unwittingly thrown together in Coward’s fastpaced, witty, and delightful romp. Join us as we playfully reimagine this classic comedy of manners.

Each performance is followed by a Q&A with the directors and audience. More information about the directors to come soon.

Reviews

"The directors and actors have to fend for themselves in recreating, say, a train and a plane crash. Even a door. In other words, expect almost no tech from the VSC’s tripartite staging, but a ton of creativity. And therein lies even more fun, as much for the directors and actors as for the audience." - Seven Days
"It might be a conceit that entertains audiences with structural sleight-of-hand more than it illuminates them, but the production — and especially the question-and-answer session with the triumvirate of directors following the presentation — does offer a few insights into the mind of a director." - Burlington Free Press
“'The Bake Off' divides a popular play into three parts, each presented by a different director and cast. This year, the play was Christopher Durang’s wacky comedy, “Beyond Therapy,” and the cast changes Tuesday were made mid-scene — seamlessly and hilariously."
- The Rutland Herald
