Cristina Alicea
Cristina Alicea has been Producing Artistic Director of Vermont Stage since 2011. During her tenure, she has shifted Vermont Stage's programming to focus on the production of contemporary theatre. By highlighting present-day stories, Vermont Stage strives to produce theatre that honors the immediacy of the art form by reflecting back our society as it grows and changes. Every Vermont Stage season is curated to give voice to the pertinent issues of the day, especially those that directly impact our community. Under Cristina Alicea's leadership, Vermont Stage has experienced unprecedented growth. She has expanded the artistic programming from 5 to 6 productions a year, moved the company to a brand new performing arts center on the waterfront, created a new Youth Company to provide theatre training and performance opportunities to Vermont middle and high school students, and doubled the company's annual revenue.
As a director favorite Vermont Stage credits include the world premieres of Doublewide by Stephen Spotswood and The Quarry by Greg Pierce (slowgirl, The Landing), The Clean House by Sarah Ruhl, Venus In Fur by David Ives, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang, Dancing Lessons by Mark St. Germain, The Mountaintop by Katori Hall, and The Call by Tanya Barfield. Prior to her arrival in Burlington, Cristina spent a year working as Assistant to the Managing Director at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company and 10 years as a freelance director. Over the years, she has had the pleasure of working with The Ensemble Studio Theatre, The Culture Project, Forum Theatre DC, The American Globe Theatre, the FringeNYC Festival, Theatre Rhinoceros, Next Stop Theatre, University of Vermont, and Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. Cristina was a finalist for a Denham fellowship given by the Society of Directors and Choreographers and is a member of the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab. Cristina has a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from George Mason University.
