The Bake OFFf

June 17-21

One classic story. Three brand new plays. Exciting possibilities.

The Bake Off

Conceived by Cristina Alicea and Gina Stevensen
Featuring new plays by Bethany Ann Barrett, Seth Jarvis, and Susan Palmer

Vermont Stage’s Bake Off is a lively theatrical experiment where three playwrights each create a brand-new short play inspired by the same beloved classic. With three directors and three casts, each play takes the source material in a completely different direction, offering a playful and fascinating look at how stories transform through different voices, styles, and imaginations.

This year’s event is inspired by The Crucible, Arthur Miller’s classic drama about the stories people choose to believe and the ways a community can be changed by fear, pressure, and suspicion.

The three new plays inspired by The Crucible are:

A Hill to Die On by Bethany Ann Barrett
On Christmas Eve, Lucia waits alone on a hill until a mysterious woman arrives with impossible knowledge of her life, her family, and the moment that changed everything.

Yellow Bird by Susan Palmer
When a beloved high school teacher assigns a controversial book in class, a disagreement with a student sets off a chain reaction that threatens her career, her relationship, and her place in the community.

Familiar Spirits by Seth Jarvis
Rich with wit and theatrical flair, Familiar Spirits is a bold reimagining of a world ruled by suspicion. In a liminal space between confession and survival, three young women navigate fear, friendship, and the men determined to define their fate.

ABOUT THE PLAY INSPIRING THIS YEAR’S The BAKE OFF: The Crucible

The Crucible (1953) is written by American playwright Arthur Miller. Best known for works that examine morality, power, and the pressures of public life, Miller wrote The Crucible as both a historical drama and a response to the political climate of his own time. The play is set during the Salem witch trials of 1692, but it was also shaped by the fear, suspicion, and public accusation that defined the McCarthy era in the United States. It was first performed in 1953 and has since become one of the most widely produced and studied plays in the American theatre.

The Crucible remains especially powerful because it explores what happens when fear overtakes reason and a community begins to turn on itself. Through the story of Salem, Miller examines themes of mass hysteria, scapegoating, reputation, guilt, integrity, and the cost of standing by the truth when it would be easier to conform. Though rooted in a specific historical moment, the play continues to resonate because of the sharp way it captures the dangers of moral panic and collective fear.

About Pick Your Price Tickets

Over the years, we've noticed our pricing hasn't worked for everyone. Some patrons can comfortably afford our tickets while others have found our pricing a challenge. So, we've decided to take action!  We're trying a new ticket model, called "Pick Your Price" which aims to increase access so more folks can come to our shows and experience live theatre. Thanks for giving this new idea a try!

WHICH TICKET SHOULD I BUY?
We encourage you to purchase the "Bravo Price” ticket which starts at $44 and is typically what we charge for our shows. If you are able, we hope you'll consider purchasing an “Encore Price” ticket which starts at $54. You'll be creating opportunities for more patrons to attend, while supporting the artists and staff who make Vermont Stage possible.  If neither of these options work for you, no problem! We've created an "Applause Price” ticket which starts at $34. We're so grateful to have you attend a Vermont Stage show!

WHY SHOULD I BUY AN ENCORE PRICE TICKET?
It costs a lot more to produce our plays than what we charge at the box office. In fact, if we were to charge our actual costs to attend, we'd need to charge each audience member $84 per seat!  When you're an "Encore Price" Ticket Buyer, you're helping us recoup some of our costs. You're also supporting the attendance of patrons who may not be able to afford standard prices, providing an opportunity for more people to experience live theatre! Thanks for supporting our community, and our theatre, in this way!

Encore Price

$54.00

When you buy this ticket, you help underwrite our shows by paying closer to the actual price it costs per seat to produce our plays. You also help increase access for other community members so they can attend our shows, too. Thanks, in advance, for your support!

Bravo Price

$44.00

This ticket represents the standard price we typically charge to attend our shows. If you are a returning single ticket buyer, and it fits within your budget, this is the price we recommend.

Applause Price

$34.00

This ticket is our entry level price for first time ticket buyers. It's also for those who feel that the other ticket prices are outside their budget this year. We want you to experience these shows and we don't want the cost to be a barrier!

AARP members get an additional 10% off on every ticket price. Learn more.

Please note: We have eliminated all ticket processing fees, but there is still a mandated 7% sales tax added upon checkout.

Questions? Please email vtstage@vermontstage.org or call our office during our box office hours (M-F, 11am-3pm) at 802-862-1497. We'd be happy to answer any questions you have and help place your order over the phone.
