The Roommate

by Jen Silverman
directed by Cristina Alicea

produced March 6-24, 2019
With a recent divorce and her son living across the country, 50-something Sharon posts a listing to fill the empty space of her Iowa home. But she quickly learns that her new roommate Robyn, a vegan from the Bronx, couldn’t be further from the ladies in her book club. When Sharon begins to uncover Robyn’s secrets, she taps into a deep-seated desire to abandon her comfort zone and live a life of danger and adventure. Soon Sharon discovers that turning over a new leaf can have unintended consequences in this wicked comedy that puts The Odd Couple and Breaking Bad in a blender.

The beauty of Silverman's play is that while it features two women, it's really about anyone who finds themselves mired in whatever rut they have either chosen or feel they have stumbled into. …Silverman somehow manages to not only make the harrowing twist palpable, but to also elicit the viewer to pull for the character who, by any rational rubric, shouldn't be pulled for.”

… Fresh, vital... Plays today don't often put mature women front and center or give voice to their concerns and disappointments. "The Roommate" does so to refreshing effect.

Slyly subversive… [a] keen intelligence… Silverman is an emerging talent to be reckoned with. Particularly impressive is her unsentimental insight into the risks of radical reinvention.
