Managing Director
Vermont Stage, Northern Vermont's home for contemporary theater based out of Burlington, VT, seeks a dynamic leader with a passion for the arts. The Managing Director will guide the development of a vision and strategy for the organization’s short and long-term growth and will provide strong leadership for the board, staff, and the community. The Managing Director and Artistic Director are co-leads of the organization, and they are jointly charged with enabling Vermont Stage to realize its goals for artistic excellence, community service, education, financial stability, fundraising, and audience engagement. Within this collaborative partnership, the Managing Director is responsible for rendering the Artistic Director’s vision into practicable initiatives that are financially sound and supported, and which galvanize the board and community behind it.
The Managing Director is responsible for the overall business, administrative, and operational management of the company. This includes leadership of fundraising, budgeting, financial management, HR, information systems, institutional marketing, and board relations.
The ideal candidate will have the vision to design and execute resource development in the short, intermediate, and long-term to help Vermont Stage achieve sustainable growth into the future; be a charismatic communicator with the ability to establish long-lasting, productive relationships with the Board and community of patrons and funders; have a demonstrated ability to generate earned income and philanthropic support; and a passion for organizational development.

Working Conditions:
Internal - Work is normally performed in a climate-controlled office environment or theater, where exposure to conditions of extreme heat/cold, poor ventilation, fumes and gasses is very limited. Noise level is moderate and includes sounds of normal office equipment (people, computers, telephones, etc.). No known environmental hazards are encountered in normal performance of job duties.
External - Moderate travel may be required. Work outside the office normally takes place in similar office environments, although occasionally work may include classroom environments.
Physical Demands:
Work involves standing and walking for brief periods of time, but most duties are performed from a seated position. Some stairs are present in the office and theater, but elevators are available. There is potential for eyestrain from reading detailed materials and computer work. Deadlines, workloads during peak periods and changing priorities may cause increased stress levels. Work normally requires finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate computer keyboards at a moderate skill level. Repetitive motion injuries may occur.
Reports to: Board of Directors
Salary Range: $45,000-$60,000. Plus, paid time off and federal holidays, parental leave, health insurance, and possibly some reimbursement for relocation expenses.

Desired Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in business, non-profit administration, or related field.
- Minimum of 2 years executive experience in a non-profit arts organization of similar size, or 2 years’ experience as development staff of an organization of greater size, or a master’s degree in theatre management.
- Demonstrated leadership ability, willingness to adopt a shared leadership approach to management, cultivates board, staff, and volunteer relationships, and the ability to delegate responsibility.
- Ability to relate to diverse internal and external constituencies including staff, board, community members, patrons, donors, actors, volunteers, public officials, and funders.
- Experience building revenue and increasing philanthropic support, including grant writing.
- Proven abilities in management, finance, communication, and marketing in a customer-centric environment.
- Must possess a value system consistent with that of Vermont Stage with a desire to, in the words of our mission, “create theatre that makes our community a better place.”
- Specific knowledge of and experience in theatre production.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Thorough knowledge of QuickBooks, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team.
- Must display caring, respect, resilience, a willingness to adapt to and lead change.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license or acquire one within 2 months.

Essential Duties:
- With the Artistic Director and the Board, update, maintain, and execute Vermont Stage’s Strategic Plan with personal emphasis on fundraising, finance, organizational structure, and operations – in support of the company’s mission and vision.
- Plan, manage, and execute all development and fundraising programs, including the annual fund, capital campaigns, special events, major donor solicitation, sponsorships, and grantmaking from foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
- Oversee communication with donors and patrons when it relates to fundraising or institutional advancement, ensuring best practices are being used in stewarding our patrons.
- Oversee the patron database and ensure that best practices are being used in recording, analyzing, and using data.
- Create and manage annual operating and capital budgets, communicate financial progress against budget to the finance committee, the Board of Directors, and external stakeholders.
- Work with outside auditors to assure that all financial systems and internal controls are adequate to appropriately serve the organization and guard against fraud and waste.
- Serve as a key representative of Vermont Stage in the community, including cultivation of donors, funding institutions, and government agencies.
- Provide additional support for and attend meetings, fundraisers, opening nights, and special events.
- Work with the Artistic Director and Board and Committee Chairs to support the development, expansion, and effective operations of the Board of Directors.
- Serve as staff liaison for Finance, Planning & Operations, and Development Committees of the Board.
- Work with the Artistic Director to develop institutional and production marketing plans to drive ticket revenue and increased attendance.
- Ensure that the organization has the information, communications, and technology systems that it needs to be effective.
- Work with staff and the Board of Directors to ensure any human resource policies are adhered to at all times.
