Set against the backdrop of the historic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911, Triangle by Laurie Brooks is a stylistically thrilling presentation which explores the immigrant experience then and now, and their vital role in creating fair labor laws, through the tragedy of the "fire that changed America."
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire led to legislation requiring improved fire safety standards, and eventually to the landmark legislation known as the "54-hour Bill,” led by Francis Perkins, Secretary of Labor and the first woman to serve as a cabinet secretary. This legislation granted workers shorter work week hours, minimum wage and unemployment insurance laws, and the end of child labor in the United States. Our production of “Triangle” aims to supplement middle and high school teachers in educating their students about this pivotal moment in our history through live performance.
Triangle is appropriate for 6th graders & up. Running Time: 70 minutes with no intermission. Presented as a highly theatrical staged reading with an optional 30 minute talkback after the performance with representatives from Migrant Justice, United Academics, and Winooski Historical Society.
